Centre of Real Time Computer Systems

Centre of Real Time Computer Systems (CRTCS) performs applied leading research on smart environments and Internet of Things and Services (IoT&S). Scientists of the Centre participate in international and national projects and actively cooperate with companies around the world. Projects “GALA” and “TV MOZAIKA” were implemented in cooperation with TEO LT AB, content distribution system “AXMEDIS” was created in cooperation with foreign partners. Centre cooperates with Aalborg University, London City University, Technical University of Denmark, Darmstadt University and their research centres. It maintains contacts with companies Siemens, Philips, Advantech, Analog Devices, Texas Instruments, Microsoft, Intermedix.

Since the year 2000, Centre performs research on smart homes. Methods, algorithms and technologies, created by the scientists of CRTCS, enable implementation of innovative systems of smart environments, smart systems and IoT, as well as home systems with services designed for them. Implemented projects of future home equipment and high technologies include a digital home system, integrated health promotion system “Gudris”, smart kitchen system “Fėja”, prototype e-refrigerator and innovative technologies and services for home smart environments that make decisions independently according to user’s habits.

Innovations created at the Centre are based on an open architecture model, which allows integration of various third party services – thus creating new business models for potential providers of services for smart environments.

Production development

Products created, designed and manufactured at the Centre are competitive, distinguished by intellectual solutions, increased functionality and lower price. Majority of Lithuanian companies are interested in mass designing and production of products, however, the access to real time systems design is difficult for them, therefore, Centre, which has designing technologies and employs highly qualified specialists, can offer these services.

Consultation services

CRTCS organizes consultations for specialists of industrial companies as a one-stop-shop via the open access of National Innovation and Entrepreneurship Centre (NIEC) at the valley Santaka.

CRTCS scientists and researchers have expertise in the following areas: modelling and creation of smart environment and smart house systems; Internet of Things and Services; modelling and creation of embedded systems; agent and multi-agent systems; artificial intellect and decision making; formal modelling and extensive experience in designing, creation and installation of various IT solutions.

International projects

  1. 2009 – 2011 SRED project “Prototype Project for Digital Home Service Development and Management System “SNAPAS” and Services Based on this System”, client – UAB “Elsis TS”
A prototype for provision and management of digital home services has been developed and tested in real-life conditions, 4 prototype smart home services have been developed, installed and tested in real residents’ homes (Level of technological preparation – 9, test products are provided for user’s evaluation).
  2. 2009 – 2011 SRED project “Creation of New Electronic Services Based on WiMAX Positioning Technologies”, client – AB “Lietuvos radijo ir televizijos centras”
Project implementation included development of a prototype system for provision of interactive and intelligent positioning services, which promotes distribution of a new generation wireless broadband internet and enable provision of services based on positioning. A prototype of the service “Advertisement in websites of partners” based on positioning has been developed as well. Prototypes were installed and tested in a real production environment at AB “LRTC” (Level of technological preparation – 7, prototype demonstration).
  3. 2012 – 2015 EU Structural Funds project “Research and Development of Internet of Things and Services Technologies and Infrastructure for the Smart Environments (IDAPI)”
Project implementation included extensive research in the area of IoT&S, managed by high level scientists, improving qualification and competences of young scientists and researchers, encouraging their mobility. Project objective – analysis of technologies for IoT&S for smart environments, creation of a common software framework for smart environments that integrates IoT devices, smart services and user context interfaces. Technologies developed during this project are aimed at being the basis for creation of innovative internationally competitive products. Trained specialists further ensure high quality of scientific research at international level.
  4. 2013 – 2015 EU Structural Funds project “Research on Smart Home Environment and Development of Intelligent Technologies (BIATech)”
Project objective – creation of intelligent multi-agent technologies for future homes, related to identification of condition of home dwellers and decision making, also, development of methods that allow the creation of smart services for IoT environment based on the above-mentioned technologies. Project implementation included development of methods, technologies and techniques that allow a precise identification of the resident’s condition when he or she is indoors (location, body position, physiological parameters) and development of intelligent home services based on multi-agent systems. Intelligent services are intelligent because they make decisions independently, without human intervention by monitoring parameters of the home environment, residents’ habits and his or her condition.  Models simulating an intelligent home environment were created for testing these technologies at the Laboratories of Internet of Services and Internet of Things of KTU’s Centre of Real Time Computer Systems at the open access centre of Santaka valley. During the project, 1 patent was registered (“Method for indoor positioning of wireless local network (WLAN) objects”), 8 scientific publications published, 4 presentations given at international scientific conferences.

National projects

  1. 2006 – 2008 FP6 IST Integrated Project “Automating Production of Cross Media Content for Multichannel Distribution (AXMEDIS)”
A system prototype was created and demonstrated that allows producers, broadcasters and users to create any kind of digital content (video films, music, cards, photographs, documents, etc.) in various formats, transform it into any kind of transfer channels and devices (STB, IPTV, Internet computers, personal digital assistants, mobile telephones, audio/video players, etc.), transfer it via all channels, protect the content and manage it by electronic contracts under their own determined rules and procedure of use (Level of technological preparation – 7, prototype demonstration).
  2. 2006 – 2009 FP6 IST Specific Targeted Research Project “Solving Major Problems in MicroSensorial Wireless Networks (uSWN)”
Project implementation included development of universal multilayer software and mediation equipment for microsensorial processors, as well as a system for collection, processing, storage and provision of sensor data. Project prototype was demonstrated at Birštonas municipality for monitoring and processing of bioparameters of sanatorium patients in real time, identification of patients’ location and insurance and monitoring of the territory’s security (Level of technological preparation – 7, prototype demonstration).
